Drinking Safety Tips

Essential safety guidelines for responsible drinking

Responsible drinking means knowing how to stay safe and recognizing when someone needs help. These tips can help you and your friends stay safe while drinking.

Before You Drink

Eat a substantial meal

Food slows alcohol absorption into your bloodstream

Plan your transportation

Designate a driver or arrange a ride before you start drinking

Set a drink limit

Decide how many drinks you'll have and stick to it

Bring cash

Avoid overspending by setting a budget for the night

While Drinking

Pace yourself

No more than one standard drink per hour

Alternate with water

Stay hydrated and slow down your drinking

Avoid drinking games

Games that encourage rapid consumption are dangerous

Know what you're drinking

Avoid unknown mixed drinks and watch your drink

Never leave your drink unattended

Protect yourself from drink tampering

Recognizing Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if someone shows these signs:

Confusion or stupor
Vomiting
Seizures
Slow or irregular breathing
Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
Unconsciousness and can't be woken

🚨 Never leave an intoxicated person alone. Don't try to "sleep it off" - BAC can continue to rise even after someone stops drinking.

Helping Others

Stay with them

Don't leave someone who is heavily intoxicated alone

Keep them awake

Try to keep them conscious and sitting up

Call for help

Don't hesitate to call emergency services if needed

Monitor breathing

Watch for signs of respiratory distress
